One of the many reasons that Coral Gables is the top destination for fine living in South Florida is its rich and vibrant local culture. Not a day goes by without an event, festival, or other leisure opportunity. There’s something for everyone in this historic and charming community. Here is just some of what’s in store for residents this October alone.
On October 2, the Coral Gables Museum, located on 285 Aragon Avenue, will host a unique exhibit, “The Glass House: A Chapel in a Cathedral of Nature.” Organized by the museum along with curatorial advisor Hilary Lewis, the biographer of architect Philip Johnson, this exhibit will feature a dozen large-scale color photographs by renowned architectural photographer Robin Hill of Philip Johnson’s Glass House campus. Lewis will take visitors through the historical context of these images. Other aspects of the showcase include a model of the Glass House by artist Rirkrit Tiravanija, documentary videos, construction plans, and a campus map. It’s a great cultural excursion that will take place throughout the week except Monday.
For another great trip to the famous Coral Gables Museum, consider the exhibit centered on the Ralph Munroe Marine Stadium, a modernist concrete structure that stands out for its one-of-a-kind appearance. Designed in 1963 by a young Cuban architect named Hilario Candela, this 6,566-seat stadium is a marvel of design and engineering inspired by Havana’s famous Tropicana Nightclub. With a football field-length roofline (356 ft.) that was the longest span of cantilevered concrete in the world at the time, the stadium remains a cultural icon. Learn more about it through film clips, antique hydroplanes, videos of Parkour athletes’ stunts, site-specific graffiti murals, and much more. The multimedia exhibit will surely bring Miami’s most darling building back to life.
